Learning through football

Adding value in the classroom

The Scottish FA is committed to providing opportunities for everyone to participate in football regardless of ability or background. We want to see more children engaged in football ‘off the pitch’, using football as a means to learn in the classroom. To capture the excitement we all feel at Scotland qualifying for UEFA EURO 2020, and because Hampden Park is a proud host of 4 matches in this special tournament, we have created this ‘Learning Through Football’ platform, based on the ‘inter-disciplinary learning tool’ model.

Modern Languages Week Scotland.

Languages week

To celebrate Languages Week Scotland from 1 – 5 February 2021, we are delighted to launch the latest addition to our #LearningThroughFootball platform – our modern languages resource. Below you will find a new curriculum section for ‘modern languages’ with suggested projects for your pupils.

Case Studies

Develop a report, persuasive or discussion piece on minority groups in football.

Mrs Church, Miller Primary School, Glasgow:
Primary 5

"In our French work we have been learning about minorities in France and the role immigration had played in the success of football in France. We will look at researching player profiles for the French team and extend this further in discussions with our pupils.

The children were really interested in the French World Cup team and the fact that 87% were immigrants. The children made player profiles for Scotland and France and produced some keynote presentations."

Investigate the design of a football, football boots or a football strip

Mrs Church, Miller Primary, Glasgow:
Primary 6/5 and Primary 4

"In P4 we have been looking at designing, so we will be looking at football kits and in particular tailoring them for better performance. We could extend this to training gear that may suit different climates.

Some children had a great idea to screen shot the original strip and adapt slightly. This turned into an ICT lesson for others because the child took the lead on this. Others preferred to use good old fashioned paper.

We found ourselves diversifying from the main activities planned which was excellent because the kids were able to explore their own interests."

Create your own UEFA EURO 2020 song/jingle.

Miller Primary School, Glasgow:
Primary 6/5

The children created their own theme music for the Euros on garage band. I was so impressed.

Design or construct model stadia – consider the 12 unique stadia hosting UEFA EURO 2020.

Mrs Church, Miller Primary school, Glasgow:
Primary 6/5

"We are in the middle of designing stadiums. Some of the children have started to make 3D models. The interesting twist is that the children have designed some to comply with the covid guidelines."

Try different ways of match reporting; match previews, live action reports, post match analysis.

Mrs Church, Miller Primary school:
Primary 6/5

"Two of our pupils worked on commentating over a Rangers and Celtic Match. They then did some post match analysis and one boy played the role of Steven Gerrard."

Mrs Church, Miller Primary school:
Primary 6/5

"We investigated the different countries in the tournament and discovered how to say hello. Some children made a keynote that could be shown at Glasgow airport. One child was particularly interested in the flags.

One child decided to do the jigsaw of the world we had. This was a first for them so it was lovely to see the interest. We then all played guess where the country is on the map. I was amazed at how much they had picked up."
