100 days to go until UEFA EURO 2020 kicks off

Today (4 March) marks just 100 days to go until the beginning of the special 60th anniversary edition of the UEFA European Championship, EURO 2020. On Friday 12 June, the first game will kick off in the Stadio Olimpico in Rome, seeing Italy take on Turkey as the Championship gets under way.

Glasgow is one of 12 Host Cities for the event, and will host four matches in Hampden Park on 15, 19, 23, and 30 June.

The city’s iconic George Square will also become the epicentre for fan activity next summer as it hosts an exciting Football Village for all 31 days of the Championship, drawing on Glasgow’s world-class event host credentials and bringing the city to life with a celebration of arts, culture, music, and football.

An additional Fan Zone will open in Merchant City on the four match days in Glasgow, giving sports fans even more opportunities to soak up the atmosphere and be part of the city’s celebrations.

To mark 100 days to go, the official Tournament mascot Skillzy hailed a UEFA EURO 2020 Glasgow Host City branded taxi to travel across the city’s iconic Clyde Arc bridge – with bridges being UEFA’s common theme between all 12 Host Cities.

Councillor David McDonald, Chair of Glasgow Life and Depute Leader of Glasgow City Council, said: “With just 100 days to go until UEFA EURO 2020 kicks off, plans are well under way to ensure the city is ready to welcome international football fans, and to deliver the famous warm Glasgow welcome to all spectators.

“We’re delighted to be hosting four matches, as well as the free UEFA Festival sites in the city centre. Glasgow is known for delivering world-class sporting events and UEFA EURO 2020 will be another incredible event for the city.”

Ian Maxwell, Scottish FA chief executive, said: “We’re very proud that Glasgow is one of the 12 host cities hosting matches at UEFA EURO 2020 as we celebrate the 60th anniversary of the European Championship.

“You can feel excitement building across the city and we’re now focusing on the play-offs as we look to secure our place at the tournament. The Football Village will be home to fans throughout UEFA EURO 2020, and our goal is for Scotland to play a central role in the festival of football, both on and off the field.”

Scotland are due to host Israel at Hampden Park in their Play Off semi-final qualifier for UEFA EURO 2020. If Steve Clarke’s side progress, they will be away to Norway or Serbia to contend a place in the finals.

A handful of tickets are still available for the Israel match at scottishfa.co.uk/tickets.
