GLASGOW CLOSE TO SIGNING-UP FOR RESCHEDULED UEFA EURO 2020

Following today’s announcement from UEFA’s Executive Committee on the future planning for the rescheduled UEFA EURO 2020, the Local Organising Structure Glasgow is continuing discussions with a view to reaffirming its position as a host city for next year’s rescheduled tournament.

The LOS - which includes members from Glasgow City Council, Scottish Government, Scottish FA, VisitScotland, and Police Scotland - had discussed the implications for the city project in light of the postponement caused by COVID-19. In particular, they were required to consider Glasgow and Hampden Park’s ability to co-host the tournament in 2021 against any other activities already
confirmed for the city and the stadium around the new dates of 11 June to 11 July.

Given the endorsement of the Council’s City Administration Committee today, Glasgow is committed to continuing its discussions with UEFA, with a view to reconfirming its position by the 30 April 2020 deadline.

Councillor David McDonald, Depute Leader, Glasgow City Council:

“Once the country is through the current health emergency, the Glasgow Local Organising Committee believes that UEFA EURO 2020 will make a significant contribution to creating a festival atmosphere once again in the city centre, provide an opportunity for communities to gather and celebrate together and provide a welcome boost to businesses in the city following an exceptionally difficult year.”

Rod Petrie, Chair of LOS Glasgow and Scottish FA President:

“LOS Glasgow commends and acknowledges the positive leadership demonstrated by UEFA in taking the correct decision to postpone UEFA EURO 2020 and we also recognise the uncertainty created by the COVID-19 pandemic at this time.

“We have been in regular dialogue with our colleagues at UEFA and are mindful of the unique logistical challenges presented by a postponement to a tournament hosted in 12 cities across Europe.

“The immediate priority now that we have reiterated our commitment, is to maintain an operational review of the ongoing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, in relation to the planned hosting model and deliverables for UEFA EURO 2020, working closely with all relevant Host Authorities.”
